BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior defender Sydney Dewhurst has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Dewhurst was a key part of the BSU defensive effort during the Bears' MASCAC Tournament title run. She helped limit Fitchburg State to just four shots on goal in a 3-1 semifinal round triumph over the Falcons; and Westfield State to eight shots on goal in a 3-2 championship game victory over the Owls as the Bears earned their first conference title since 2013 and fouth in program history. The BSU defense also held the MASCAC leading scorer to just one shot on net in the championship game win.
Through 19 games this season, Dewhurst has notched 11 goals and ten assists for 32 points. She ranks second among the MASCAC leaders in assists, and is tied for third in both goals and scoring.
On a national level, Dewhurst is tied for 29th in all of Division III in assists.
In 46 games over three seasons with the Bears, Dewhurst has amassed 24 goals (five game-winners) and 19 assists for 67 points. She is tied for fifth among the Bears' all-time assist leaders and ranks seventh in scoring.
The MASCAC Player of the Week honor marks the fifth of Dewhurst's career.
The BSU women's soccer team is currently 12-4-3 on the season. The Bears will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament later this week for the first time since 2013 and fourth time in program history. Tournament pairings will be announced later this afternoon.
