Field Hockey Drops 10-0 Decision to Wellesley

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore forward Julia Rappaport (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) recorded a hat trick, and sophomore midfielder Maddie Bettencourt (Virginia Beach, Va.) and junior defender Danielle Brubaker (Princeton Junction, N.J.) added two goals apiece to lead the visiting Wellesley College field hockey team to a 10-0 victory over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

The Blue improve to 2-2 on the season, while the host Bears fall to 0-3.

Bettencourt opened the scoring for the Blue just 2:31 into the first quarter as she stickhandled around a pair of BSU defenders on the left side and ripped a shot inside the far post.

The next two Wellesley goals came off of penalty corners. Senior forward Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) redirected a backhand shot from junior midfielder Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) midway through the opening period. Less than three minutes later, junior forward Maggie King (Philadelphia, Pa.) also scored on a redirect following a shot from junior defender Mitzi Wiggin (North Hampton, N.H.) with 4:16 remaining in the opening session.

Bettencourt potted an unassisted tally 4:10 into the second quarter to make it a 4-0 game. She intercepted an attempted clearance and ripped a shot from the top of the circle into the left side of the net.

Dennis blasted a shot into the right side of the cage from the top of the circle to extend the Wellesley lead to 5-0 with 1:24 remaining in the first half.

Rappaport netted a natural hat trick in the third quarter to make it an 8-0 game. Bettencourt, sophomore midfielder Caitlin Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) and Maisano picked up assists on Rappaport's three goals.

Brubaker added a pair of unassisted tallies in the final period to cap off the scoring.

Wellesley finished with a 42-5 shot advantage for the game as well as a 20-1 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Senior Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.), freshman Deirdre Duarte (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore ReAnna Kenyon (Carver, Mass.) combined to make 14 saves in goal for Bridgewater State with Duarte leading the way with nine stops. The Bears also received a pair of defensive saves from sophomore defender Aidan Ryan (Uxbridge, Mass.) and senior midfielder Jacquelyn Legendre (Westport, Mass.).

Junior Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman Eleanor Rothera (Lusby, Md.) split the game between the pipes for Wellesley with Sullivan picking up her second win of the season. Sullivan did not face a shot on goal, while Rothera made two saves.

The Bears open Little East Conference (LEC) play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Castleton University for a four o'clock game with the Spartans. The Blue entertain UMaine-Farmington on Saturday afternoon at 12:30.
