Women's Soccer Posts 2-0 MASCAC Shutout of Salem State

By Jim Fenton

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior goalkeeper Logan Levesque (Bristol, R.I.) recorded her second straight shutout for the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.

Levesque and the Bears stopped Salem State University, 2-0, at Mazzaferro Field, giving her 23 career shutouts.

Levesque is now one shutout shy of the BSU record held by Lauren DeSousa, who had 24 shutouts from 2015-17.

With 34 career wins, Levesque ranks second at BSU behind only Tracey Ullathorne, a member of the school's Athletics Hall of Fame who had 38 wins from 1992-95.

Levesque has played 61 career games in net, ranking second at BSU behind Kristen Young with 64.

The Bears broke a five-game winless streak after going 0-2-3 since a win over the Mass. College of Liberal Arts on Sept. 20.

BSU had both goals in the second half and improved to 4-6-3, including 4-1-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Salem State falls to 6-5-2 and is 3-3 in the MASCAC with two straight losses.

BSU took a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the second half thanks to an own goal.

Junior Nina DiRusso (Braintree, Mass.) lobbed a cross from inside the 18 towards the top of the six. The ball deflected off a Salem State defender and rolled inside the left post.

The Bears made it 2-0 at 78:52 when senior Abigail Shea (Somerset, Mass.) scored from junior Natalie Mattos (Fairhaven, Mass.).

Junior Kacey Parker (Attleboro, Mass.) sent a pass down the right sideline to Mattos in the middle, and she slipped a pass between two defenders.

Shea took it on the left side of the 18 and beat the Vikings' goalkeeper one-on-one with a shot into the right side of the net inside the far post for her third goal.

Levesque made eight saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. She has allowed four goals in the last seven games.

Salem State junior Ava Guyer (East Granby, Conn.) made four saves.

The Bears are idle until Wednesday, Oct. 22 when they host nationally ranked Tufts University in their last non-conference game.

The Jumbos are ranked No. 5 in the national Division III poll and entered Saturday 9-0-1.

The Vikings travel to Maine-Farmington for a non-conference game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
